Vitamin D Synergy

The current recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin D is set at 200-600IUs for 20-75 year olds respectively. This level of supplementation seems inadequate in light of recent research, the increase in immune problems. and the shockingly high number of patients showing up deficient in blood tests today. Vitamin D contributes in multiple ways to the optimal funtion of the human body as virtually every cell has a receptor for it.

The best way to see if you need additional Vitamin D is to get a simple blood test, 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3. This test is readily available through most doctors offices and, I believe should be a regular part of general screening. (Insurance coverage of this test varies.) I am surprised by how many of my patients have sub-optimal or abnormally low levels. Vitamin D deficiency is defined as a Vitamin D level <20, and insufficiency as a Vitamin D level between 20 and 30. Above 30 is considered normal but many practitioners feel that a level between 50 and 70 is optimal. Levels above 100 are potentially unsafe and levels above 150 are considered toxic.

Vitamin D Synergy contains 2000IU of Vitamin D per capsule. I don't recommend going above 2000IU without Vitamin D testing. This capsule also contains Vitamin K which is important in guiding calcium into the bones and teeth instead of the arterial wall. Patients on blood thinners should contact their physician before taking Vitamin K supplements.

I've attached the letter I send to patients notifying them of their Vitamin D levels. This letter contains additional information on current Vitamin D recommendations.
