Incontinence
Diagnosis & Treatment of Involuntary Leakage of Urine
I am excited to announce that we now offer state of the art evaluation of urinary incontinence. Incontinence, the involuntary loss of urine (leaking urine), affects over 50% of women at some time in their life. Only about a third of women with incontinence report the problem to their health care professional, either from feelings of embarrassment, acceptance of incontinence as a normal part of aging, or being unaware that treatment exists.
Your incontinence evaluation starts a thorough history. You will be given a detailed questionnaire to fill out at home and bring back in to the office. For two days, you will fill out a bladder log, where you will record your intake of fluids, frequency and amount of urination, episodes of leakage and activities and symptoms associated with the leaking. You'll then have an appointment in the office where urodynamic testing will be performed to determine the reason for your incontinence. This testing is not painful. A small catheter (a tube about the size of uncooked spaghetti) will be placed in the vagina and bladder. As these catheters are very small there is a minimal amount of discomfort associated with the procedure. (Honest!!) The bladder is then slowly filled with sterile water and bladder pressures are recorded. With these test results and your history and bladder log, I can determine what kind of incontinence you have and what kind of treatment will be most useful for you.
After this, you and I will meet to discuss your results as well as your options for treatment. Your treatment plan will be based not only on your results, but on your individual needs and preferences. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for incontinence.
The evaluation is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare.
Please speak with me or a member of my staff to schedule your evaluation.
